Marking of International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day

Today, the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial will be makred in more than 1200 communities in 115 countries, making it the largest grassroots event ever. The annual event, coordinated worldwide by the Global Health Council, commemorates the lives lost to AIDS, demonstrates support for people living with HIV/AIDS, and mobilizes community-based responses to HIV/AIDS.
With support of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS – UNAIDS in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, World Bank) Info centres for youth are planning to mark the CMD through organising a series of activities to promote Sexual and Reproductive health of youth, gain attention of the local media and local citizens.
The theme of this year`s International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is “Many lights for human rights”. The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is an opportunity for community organizations to dedicate effort in order to fight against AIDS. These organisations will be joined together in a commitment to continue the fight against AIDS until the pandemic is over.
Around the world, local organizations have already been planning CMD events in their areas. Anticipated CMD observance includes a variety of events from the lightning of candles and oil lamps in over 200 rural villages in Southeast India, to candlelight processions in Latin America, to interfaith memorial services held in the U.S. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Democratic centre “Nove Nade” / Bihać, Youth organization “Zdravo da ste” / Banja Luka and Info Centre “Abrašević” / Mostar CMD activities will include distribution of promotional T-shirts and informational brochures, media promotion, establishment of info desks for youth, street art performance, mini exhibition and a music concert.
