EVERY VICTIM OF THE ILLICIT WEAPONS IN BiH IS TOO MUCH, SAID UNDP's STEFAN PRIESNER

22/11/2006 - The weapons collection campagin and a lottery entitled GIVE AWAY WEAPONS – WIN TOOLS, organized by the United Nations Development Programme in BiH together with its partners is ongoing, and it lasts until the 5th December 2006. Every citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina that, until this date, hands over one or more pieces of the Small Arms and Light Weapons, has the opportunity to participate a unique lottery and win one of the valuable prizes.

The campaign GIVE AWAY WEAPONS – WIN TOOLS presents a a pilot project of the UNDP, with an aim to increase the security of citizens and consciences on the dangers poses by small arms and light weapons in BiH. The lottery encompasses the territory of the municipalities of Novo Sarajevo in FBiH and Istočna Ilidža in the RS.

„The process of weapons collection in BiH represents one of the key pillars of development, because. Only by increasing the level of citizen security, BiH can have the opportunity for the unrestrained development. Although Bosnia and Herzegovina, when compared to other Western European countries, is a safe place to live, the cases of the weapons misuse in houses – such as in the recent events – show that accidents are possible. In order to avoid future accidents, we call upon all citizens that own a weapon to hand it over to the authorities in charge. Every victim of the illicit weapons in BiH is too much,“ said Mr. Stefan Priesner, UNDP BiH Deputy Resident Representative.

The weapons can be handed over at the MZs of the Novo Sarajevo municipality, and at the Centre for public safety (CSB) of the Istočna Ilidža municipality. The citizen response during the first to weeks of the campaign is satisfactory. Until today, the citizens handed over tens of hand grenades, a couple of automatic and semi-automatic machine guns, pistols as well as a huge amount of ammunition.

The prizes for both of the municipalities include Scooters, DVD Players, refrigerators, TV appliances, and other valuable tools, in the total value of 14,000 KMs. The partners of UNDP in the organization of the lottery are the Police of the FBiH and Sarajevo Canton, Ministry of the interior of the RS, Europlakat, Robot Komerc and Tomašević.

The awarding ceremony is envisaged for 11th of December at the Robot komerc and Tomašević malls. The citizens can acquire additional information at the telephone: 033 563 834.
