Energy and Environment
Energy and environment are essential components of sustainable development and progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Financially disadvantaged persons may be disproportionately affected by environmental degradation and may suffer from, amongst others, inadequate access to clean affordable energy services. Climate change, biodiversity degradation and ozone layer depletion are transnational issues, and consequently, they cannot be addressed by countries acting alone. UNDP assists countries to strengthen their capacity to address these challenges at a global, national and local level, seeking out and sharing best practices, providing innovative policy advice and linking partners through pilot projects, thus helping build more sustainable communities.
Energy and environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina is mainstreamed trough the Country Office Energy and Environment Cluster activities mainly focused on strengthening of environmental management mechanisms and supporting the development of capacities at the local level for natural resource management and sustainable development.
BACKGROUND
BiH has a natural resource base that is rich and extensive. As such, it holds great potential as one of the drivers of economic growth. Energy Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability are essential components of a European future for countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina. With a generally low awareness of the interdependence between environment and development, national priority setting in this area is quite limited. UNDP focuses its support to ensure that Bosnia and Herzegovina has the human and financial resources to sustainably use its environmental and natural resources, that it meets the EU Environmental Acquis and creates green, resilient economic growth and sustainable livelihoods for its population. The ultimate goal of the UNDP Energy and Environment Programme in BiH is to fundamentally change the understanding of the environment, including water resources, and sustainable energy issues in the country, from the current perception of being a burden to an important current and future development asset.
OBJECTIVES AND NATIONAL PRIORITIES

Supporting BiH in meeting obligations towards implementation of international conventions related to climate change issues.

Supporting BiH municipalities by raising their capacities in environmental and energy planning and funding as well as linking local, entity and national level energy and environment actions that would raise absorption capacities for the EU funding.

Development of mechanism for sustainable environmental funding.

Creating energy security and clean energy systems based on introduction of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources such as biomass, solar energy, geothermal energy sources etc.,

Enabling opportunities for economic gain from biodiversity and natural values for BiH citizens.

Providing affordable, safe and sustainable water supply and sanitation systems in BiH municipalities.

Remediating high level environmental pollution sites.

Intorducing energy efficiency measures and actions into all UNDP interventions in the country.

Raising awareness and education at all levels on importance and opportunities in the field of energy and environment and benefits for BIH in reaching its sustainable development.
